Countable and Uncountable Nouns

 

গণনার ভিত্তিতে Noun-কে আমরা দুইভাগে ভাগ করতে পারি:

(i) Countable Noun.                                        (ii) Uncountable Noun.

(i) Countable Noun: যে সকল Noun-কে গণনা করা যায় তাদেরকে Countable Noun বলে।

(A countable noun is the name of anything that can be counted.)

যেমন : book, chair, table, pen, apple, etc.

(ii) Uncountable Noun: যে সব Noun-কে গণনা করা যায় না, কিন্তু ওজন দ্বারা পরিমাপ করা যায় বা অনুভূতি ও কল্পনা দ্বারা অনুভব করা যায়, তাদেরকে Uncountable Noun বলে।

(An uncountable noun is the name of anything that cannot be counted by numbers, but measured.)

যেমন : rice, sugar, water, honesty, etc.

 সেই সব ব্যক্তি, বস্তু বা ধারণার নাম যাদেরকে                                    সেই সব বস্তু, পদার্থ বা বিষয়ের নাম আলাদা আলাদা করে গণনা করা যায়।                                           যাদেরকে গণনা করা যায় না।

Example: milk, gold, coal, health, food, honesty, etc.          Example: man. boy, city, river, mango, etc.

 

Countable Nouns

animal, baby, book, bank, bed, boy, bus, car, cat, chair, city, class, cup, dog, doar, ear, egg, eye, field, film, girl, gate, gun, hat, hill, hour, journey, king, kite, lady, lake, man, minute, month, mouth. neck. newspaper, page, park, problem, ring, river, ship, shirt, sister, street, stream, son, student, table, town, week, window, woman, year, zebra, etc. - Proper noun, Common noun, Collective noun.

Uncountable Nouns

death, food, rain, water, work, truth, wind, wealth, freedom, music, peace, power, poverty, religion, fear, fire, failure, advice, hair, news, money, furniture, marriage, education, duty, childhood, boyhood, courage, earth, moon, sand, salt, sugar, snow, etc. Material noun, Abstract noun.

Countable Noun -এর বৈশিষ্ট্য:

* Countable Noun এর singular ও Plural Number হতে পারে যেমন :

a book, five books, an apple, two apples.

 

* Singular Countable Noun- এর পূর্বে a, an, the, this, that, every, each, cither, neither ইত্যাদি Determiner ব্যবহৃত হয়।

যেমন :

               This shirt is white and that shirt is blue.

                Every boy will get a prize.

                Each girl was given an apple. Neither book is good.

                Either Kamal or Jamal is guilty.

 

* Plural Countable Noun- এর পূর্বে the, these, those, all, some, several, many, both, few, a few, any, no এবং সংখ্যাবাচক শব্দ, যেমন: two, three four, ইত্যাদি Determiners বর্ভূত হয়। যেমন:

There are four books in the bag.

I have a few friends.

All men must die.

Few people can speak English well.

* Plural Countable Noun যখন সাধারণভাবে কোনো ব্যক্তি বা বস্তুকে বোঝায় তখন তার পূর্বে 'the' বসে না। কিন্তু যখন নির্দিষ্টভাবে কোনো ব্যক্তি বা বস্তুকে বোঝায় তখন তার পূর্বে the বসে। যেমন;

I like mangoes | এখনে সাধারণভাবে সব mangoes কে বোঝানো হয়েছে।

I like the mangoes of Rajshahi (এখানে নির্দিষ্টভাবে রাজশাহী অঞ্চলের mangoes-কে বোঝানো হয়েছে।

 

* Uncountable Noun এর বৈশিষ্ট্য:

* Uncountable Noun সর্বদা singular number হয় । এদের কোনো Plural form নিই । তাই verb ও singular হয়

* Uncountable Noun এর পূর্বে Indefinite Articles এ a বা an বসে না।

Uncountable Noun এর পূর্বে সাধারণত the this, that little, very little less much any some no ইত্যাদি Determiners ব্যবহৃত হয়। যেমন:

I have little rice.                               This information is true.

There is little milk in the glass.    Give me some money.

That advice was wrong.

* কখনও কখনও Delerminer ts Uncountable noun একাকী ব্যবহৃত হতে পারে (সাধারণত Material Noun এর ক্ষেত্রে)। যেমন: Water has no colours.

The ring is made of gold.

* সাধারণ Uncountable noun-এর পূর্বে articles a বা an বসে না। তবে Uncountable noun এর পূর্বে adjective থাকলে তার পূর্বে a বা an বসে। যেমন:

He runs a good business.

I received a good education.

* Uncountable noun এর সাথে কিছু Measure words ( পরিমাপ করা যায় এমন শব্দ) যোগ করে তাকে Countable noun -এ পরিবর্তন করা যায় | Measure words গুলো সাধারণত: দৈর্ঘ্য, প্রস্থ, আকার, অংশ, পাত্র ইত্যাদির সাথে সম্পর্কিত।

গঠন: Numeral (সংখ্যাবাচক শব্দ) + Measure words + of + Uncountable noun.

উদাহরণ:  A slice of bread.                           A piece of paper.

    Three acres of land.                    Two kilos of sugar.

    A pound of butter.                      A cup of tea.

    Five yards of string.                     Ten feet of cable.

Pronoun

Asif is a student. Asif is in class V. Asil goes to school everyday. Asi's teachers like Asif very much. ওপরের বাকাগুলোতে 'Asif' এই noun টি বারবার ব্যবহার করার ফলে ভাষার সৌন্দর্য নষ্ট হয়েছে এবং ভাষা হয়ে উঠেছে শ্রুতিকটু ও অস্বাভাবিক।

 

এ বাক্যগুলো যদি অন্যভাবে বলা যায় –

Asif is a student. He is in class V. He goes to school every day. His teachers like him very much.

এখানে ভাষ। শ্রুতিমধুর ও স্বাভাবিক হয়েছে। কারণ, এখনে 'Asif এই noun টি এপার ব্যবহার করে পরবর্তী সময়ে Asif এর পরিবর্তে he, his ও him ব্যবহার করা হয়েছে। He, his ও him শব্দগুলো Asif এ noun-টির পরিবর্তে বসে Asif কে নির্দেশ করে। Noun-এর পরিবর্তে ব্যবহৃত এসব word-কে বলা হয় Pronoun।

অতএব, যে word কোনো noun-এর পরিবর্তে ব্যবহৃত হয় তাকে Pronoun বলে।

Classifications of Pronoun

Pronoun আট প্রকার। নিচে সংক্ষেপে সেগুলোর নাম ও উদাহরণ দেওয়া হলো। পরে এই Chapter-এ প্রতিটি ভাগ নিয়ে আমরা বিস্তারিত আলোচনা করব।

1. Personal Pronoun                               যেমন: you, they we, he, she, etc.

2. Interrogative Pronoun                           যেমন; who, what, which, etc.

3. Distributive Pronoun                             যেমন: each neither, either, etc.

4. Demonstrative Pronoun                         যেমন: this, such, that, etc.

5. Relative Pronoun                                   যেমন: who, what, which that, etc.

6. Reciprocal Pronoun                               যেমন : each, other, one, another, etc.

7. Reflexive and Emphatic Pronoun          যেমন : myself, yourself, herself, etc

8. Indefinite Pronoun                                 যেমন : one any some etc.

 

1. Personal Pronoun

কোনো ব্যক্তি বা বস্তুর নামের পরিবর্তে যে Pronoun ব্যবহৃত হয় তাকে Personal Pronoun বলে।

যেমন: (The pronoun used instead of a person or thing is called personal pronoun.)

ব্যক্তির নামের পরিবর্তে : Kamal is a good boy. I like him.

বস্তুর নামের পরিবর্তে : Oxygen is important for life. It is found everywhere.

Personal Pronoun আবার তিন প্রকার যথ:

(a) Personal pronoun of the first person :

First person বা উত্তম পুরুষে যেসব pronoun (সর্বনাম) ব্যবহৃত হয় তারা এই প্রকারের pronoun যেমন: I, we, my me, our us, ours etc.

 (b) Personal pronoun of the second person:

Second person বা মধ্যম পুরুষের যেসব pronoun ব্যবহৃত হয় তাদেরকে এই প্রকারে গণ্য করা হয়। যেমন: You, yours, thou, they thine, thee, etc. 

(b) Personal pronoun of the Third person:

Third person বা নাম পুরুষের যেসব pronoun ব্যবহৃত হয় তারা এই প্রকারের pronoun । যেমন: He, She, him, his, they, their, them, etc.
