Parts of Speech

Part এর অর্থ হলো 'অংশ', আর Speech এর অর্থ 'বাক্য'। সুতরাং Part of Speech বলতে বুঝায় 'বাক্যের অংশ।

 নিচের বাক্যগুলো পড়ো :

1.       The car runs fast (গাড়িটি দ্রুত চলে।)

2.       Oh, how beautiful the girl looks in her new dress! (ওহ, মেয়েটিকে তার নতুন পোশাকে কী সুন্দর লাগছে!)

এভাবে, Sentence এ ব্যবহৃত প্রত্যেকটি word কে এক একটি Part of Speech বলা হয়।

(Each of the every word used in a sentence is called a Part of Speech.)

 

Classifications of Parts of Speech

ইংরেজি grammar-এ, বাক্যে ব্যবহৃত শব্দগুলোকে তাদের কাজ অনুসারে ৮টি শ্রেণিতে ভাগ করা হয়েছে। যেমন:

1. Noun                5. Adverb

2. Pronoun          6. Preposition

3. Adjective        8. Interjection

4. Verb                 7. Conjunction

 

Noun

নিচের বাক্যগুলো দেখো -

Adnan helps Shakib.

Dhaka is the capital of Bangladesh.

The book is on the table.

Honesty is the best policy.

Walking is a good exercise.

ওপরের বাক্যগুলোতে Adnan ও Shakib দ্বারা দুজন ব্যক্তির নাম; Dhaka ও Bangladesh দ্বারা দুটি স্থানের নাম; book ও table

দ্বারা দুটি বস্তুর নাম; Honesty দ্বারা একটি গুণের নাম; walking ও exercise দ্বারা দুটি কালের নাম বোঝাচ্ছে। নাম প্রকাশকারী এসব শব্দসমূহকে বলা হয় Noun

সুতরাং, যে সব Word দ্বারা কোনো ব্যক্তি, বন্ধু, স্থান, দোষ বা গুণ, অবস্থা, কাজ ইত্যাদির নাম বোঝায় তাদেরকে Noun বলা হয়।

(A noun is a word which denotes the name of a person, thing, place, quality, state or action.)

Classifications of Noun

Noun-এর শ্রেণিবিভাগকে আমরা দুটি দৃষ্টিকোণ থেকে বিচার করতে পারি।

(a) Noun যেসব জিনিসের নাম প্রকাশ করে ঐসব জিনিসের অবস্থা বিচারে শ্রেণিবিভাগ, এবং

(b) Noun যেসব জিনিসের নাম প্রকাশ করে ঐসব জিনিসের `গণন যোগ্যতা’ বিচারে শ্রেণিবিভাগ

Concrete Noun

যে সকল Noun-এর বাহিরগত আকার বা নিজ্বস অবস্থান আছে এবং যেগুলো ইন্দ্রিয়ের সাহায্যে অনুভব করা যায়, সে সব Noun-কে বলা হয় concrete noun।

(A concrete noun is the name of anything which has external physical existence and can be perceived through senses.)

Example: cow, tree, man, flower ইত্যাদি (এদের বাহ্যিক আকার বা অবস্থান রয়েছে।)

air, gas, odour, ইত্যাদি (এদেরকে ইন্দ্রিয়ের দ্বারা উপলব্ধি করা যায়।)

এবার চার ধরনের Concrete Noun-সম্বন্ধে নিচে আলোচনা করা হলো :

 i. Proper Noun:

যে সকল noun বা নাম দ্বারা নিদির্ষ্ট কোনো ব্যক্তি, বস্তু অথবা স্থানের নাম বোঝায়, তাদেরকে Proper Noun বলে।

(A proper noun is the name of a particular person, place or thing.)

Examples: Fardeen is a good student.

Dhaka is a big city.

The Padma is a big river.

 ii. Common Noun:

যে সকল Noun দ্বারা একই ধরনের প্রজাতি বা শ্রেণির ব্যক্তি, বস্তু বা প্রাণীর প্রত্যেকের সাধারণ নাম বা পদবীকে বোঝায় তাদেরকে Common Noun বলে।

(A common noun is the name given or designation in common to every person or thing of the same class or kind.)

Examples: Nazrul is a great poet.

Dhaka is a big city.

The rose is a nice flower.

He is a good boy.

 iii. Collective Noun:

যে সব Noun দ্বারা সমজাতীয় বা একই জাতীয় কোনো ব্যক্তি, বস্তু বা প্রাণীকে পৃথকভাবে না বুঝিয়ে তাদের সমষ্টিকে বোঝায়, তাদেরকে Collective Noun বলে।

(A collective noun is the name of a group or collection of similar persons or things considered as one undivided whole.) Examples: He joined the army.

Our team has won the game.

A flock of sheep is grazing.

আরও কতিপয় Collective noun -এর উদাহরণ: gang (দল), cavalry (বিচার সভা বা কোর্টের আইনজ্ঞ ব্যক্তিবর্গ), crowd (জনতা), team (দল), party (দল), infantry (পদাতিক)

iv. Material Noun:

যে Noun কোনো পদার্থের সম্পূর্ন অংশকে এককভাবে বোঝায় এবং তার অন্তর্গত বা অধীনস্থ কোনো খণ্ড বা অংশকে বোঝায় না, তাকে Material Noun বলে। এ Noun যে বস্তু গুলোকে নির্দেশ করে তাকে গণনা করা যায় না, অন্য কোনো উপায়ে পরিমাপ করতে হয়।

(A Material Noun is a name which indicates a matter or substance as a mass and does not indicate any part or number of it.)

আরও সহজ করে বলা যায়

যে Noun কে গণনা করা যায় না শুধু ওজন করা যায় কেবল তাকেই Material Noun বলে।

Examples: The ring is made of gold.

The chair is made of wood.

Please, give me a glass of water.

আরও কিছু Material Noun-এর উদাহরণ হলো: Rice, salt, sugar, copper, oil, silver, soil, ইত্যাদি।

 2. Abstract Noun

যে Noun দ্বারা কোনো ব্যক্তি বা বস্তুর দোষ, গুণ, অবস্থা বা কার্যের নামকে প্রকাশ করে তাকে Abstract Noun বলে। Abstract Noun চোখে দেখা যায় না, ধরা যায় না, ছোঁয়া যায় না, শুধু অনুভব করা যায় মাত্র।

(An Abstract Noun is the name of a quality or state belonging to an object.)

Examples: Honesty is the best policy.

Kindness is a great virtue.

Forgiveness is divine.

Happiness consists in contentment.

Freedom is our birth right.

He burst into laughter.

আরও কতিপয় Abstract Noun হচ্ছে:

Goodness, illness, truth, love, hatred, boyhood, childhood, wisdom, friendship, misery, health ইত্যাদি।

চেনার উপায়: Abstract Noun-এর শেষে সাধারণত -ness, - tion, -hood, -ship, -dom, -ment, -ism, - th, -ty, -ey, -ce থাকে।
